Know your enemy : Law enforcement

Know your enemy : Law enforcement

The cops are all around, it's an unavoidable fact. You may have heard them by many other names, such as pig, bacon, The Fuzz, The Man, The Bronze, county mounty, gumball machine, and many vulgar words that I don't have enough room to print. Now, the basic idea of a police force is not an evil one. They need them to protect citizens of this country from criminals. However, what is evil, is when police bother themselves with petty traffic violations, while ignoring more important issues. Everyone knows of some asshole somewhere who likes to pull people over for 5 over, and write them up for that. I have never heard of a cop who realizes that burnouts are safe, due to the fact that you are immobile, or close to it, while burning out.

To avoid such costly and angering run-ins with the fuzz, one must be aware of a few points. One of these is cop detection and avoidance. Know where cops like to hang out. Avoid "unlawful" acts in areas where you have poor visibility to either the front or rear. Be very careful at night, when the boys in blue could be watching, unbeknowst to yourself.

Another way to avoid cops, at least speeding traps, is radar detectors. Valentine One makes a unit that is probably the best on the market. It may cost a little bit of money, but if you like to speed, such an investment might save you in the long run. Also, know your state's radar detector laws. Scan Laws has a great list of what is legal and not.

Now, you can't avoid the cops forever. It's almost inevitable that those pesky lights will turn up in your mirror. Whether you get a citation or not depends on the cop. Again, there are some cops that are real pricks, and those will be discovered soon. Avoid entering areas where these cops patrol. Once you get a ticket, perhaps you would feel like fighting it. One such instance is careless driving as opposed to reckless driving. In some states they have both careless and reckless driving. Cops may like to write you up for reckless driving, due to the larger fine involved. However, in some states, in order to prove reckless driving, you have to prove a wanton or negligible disregard for human life. If you are burning out in the middle of nowhere, that is hardly reckless. You can fight that and possibly get off without a fine.

The key to knowing such loopholes as above is knowing your own state's laws. No generic, all-states book can really explain your particular laws. Where can you find your state laws? A library should have them. Most states have theirs online. Below are links for the state code of laws, as well as some other helpful, fuzz-busting links.

Speedtrap RegistryA great site, listing some speed traps, as well as information on your state's police vehicles. Know of a speed trap? Submit it here and save other's the hassle of finding out for themselves.

Definitive guide to Speeding TicketsThis site is really loaded. It contains a lot of information on how to avoid tickets, as well as fight them in court.

Speeding Tips A long list of what to do to avoid tickets, avoid cops, etc. Very informative, and written from someone who knows.

Successful Speeding Taken from the July 1994 issue of Car and Driver, this is another list of tips to avoid tickets. As you read through this and other sites, you will notice that they all say some of the same things. That probably means more than one person has noticed it, so take note of these things.

How to Beat a Speeding Ticket This site is Canadian, I believe, but some of the tips are useful. All of the tips are useful if you're Canadian, I guess.

Avoiding Points in Court Another page about how to avoid tickets, and how to keep a clean driving record once you recieve your ticket. Like stated earlier, some of the pages will contain similar information, but I think they are all worth taking a look at.

Massachusetts Speeding Ticket Defense A law firm dedicated to helping people get off on their traffic violations. Although they are probably only a feasible solution to those in Massachusetts, there are tips and tricks that can be found from their site.

Speedtraps in Ireland Here's a site of speed traps in, you guessed it, Ireland. Useful for the Irish, perhaps useful for you, too.

Speed-traps in Israel OK, this one caught me off guard. However, it can be very useful for those living in the aforementioned place.

Here are the states' websites. Now, to find your particular law may require some searching, but eventually you should be able to get there. Keep in mind this may not cover all local ordinances, which towns may have to bring in extra revenue by screwing over you, the innocent motorist.
